Increasing recognition of historically marginalized scientists: Lessons learned from the Nomination Task Force

The Space Physics and Aeronomy (SPA) Section of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) created a Nomination Task Force (NTF) in 2017 upon concerns that numbers women nominated for AGU Fellow were significantly lower than would be expected based on SPA membership representation, including as low zero two four preceding years. Now NTF has been existence through cycles Honors Awards, outcomes indicate success increasing number nominations scientists from historically marginalized groups. These data work enhanced nomination pool rather occurring at expense other nominees. Until recently, ability to collect distribute demographic information limited, cisgender binary identities are often inferred. Moving forward it is goal more inclusive intentional with respect gender, racial, ethnic identities. We share our best practices stories broad audience help others build within their own institutions professional also discuss challenges we still facing provide suggestions continuing improve process.
